Nothing says Southern cooking and comfort food like Chicken and Dumplings.
In my house, there are the famous “McGee family dumplings”. I’m ashamed to say I haven’t mastered those yet. They’re rolled, then cut with a knife to create long tender dumplings once they’re cooked in the rich chicken stock/broth.
I’ve made our family German noodles which are as good as the aforementioned dumplings. I think the dumpling thing in the South is part of the German heritage so many of us have. While I have very strong English/Scots/Irish ancestry, German ancestry makes up a large portion of my DNA.
A couple of years ago I had my DNA done for genealogical purposes. While I wasn’t surprised in some areas, I was in others. Like nice little chunks of Scandinavian and Iberian Peninsula ancestry among some other interesting findings.
So why would I mention that related to food and cooking?
Well, I think in a tiny way it may account for some of my culinary tastes and adventures.
Our Southern cooking is really a fusion of our heritage and ancestry. And, it is constantly evolving.
That takes us to today’s recipe – Savory Slow Cooker Chicken and Dumplings.
This past weekend, Tall & Handsome and both were fighting off something. Perish the thought it could be this nasty flu going around. We both have had runny noses, scratchy throats, and upset tummies.
Even so, we have to eat something and keep fluids going. I was racking my brain for something I could throw into the slow cooker and let it cook while I returned to bed to nurse this “whatever bug”. It had to be something tasty, comforting and last a few meals because I just haven’t had the energy to do major cooking.
So, I came up with Savory Slow Cooker Chicken and Dumplings. It hit the spot! Don’t think of this as your grandmother’s dumplings, but a new Southern fusion for when you want something tasty, hot and comforting with minimal effort.

I recently made this using a package of gnocchi. Tall & Handsome was sick with the flu and needed comfort food. It surpassed that. It was heaven in a bowl!
Savory Slow Cooker Chicken & Dumplings
3 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
1 onion, chopped
2 reaspoons minced garlic
3 hearts of celery, chopped
3/4 cup chopped carrots
3/4 teaspoon dried oregano
3/4 teaspoon dried thyme
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 bay leaf
3 cans cream of chicken soup
3 cups low sodium chicken broth
5 ounces No Yolk Broad Noodles, cooked according to directions in boiling water or 1 package shelf stable gnocchi
- In the bottom of the slow cooker layer onion, garlic, celery and chopped carrots.
- Lay chicken breasts on top of the vegetables in the bottom of the slow cooker. Sprinkle the seasoings and bay leaf over the chicken breast.
- In a medium bowl whisk together the cream of chicken soup and chicken broth until smooth. Pour over the chicken breast in the slow cooker.
- Cover and cook chicken on high 3 hours or until tender.
- When chicken is done, shredded chicken with two forks.
- Stir in cooked noodles, and stir to distribute noodles in chicken mixture.
