Nuts and Bolts

By Beverly Hicks Burch

We’ve all heard of and at one time or the other eaten some type of Chex Party mix. But, did you know the original recipe has been around for 50 years or more? The original recipe was first published by Ralston Purina Co., but now General Mills hold the title for the Chex Mix…and it seems umpteen different varieties.

I first began making a party mix years ago…probably before my son was born. Long, long time ago my aunt made a version called “Nuts and Bolts”.

Well, over the years through trial and error, I’ve developed my own special version of this old favorite…and it has yet to disappoint.

2 cups Wheat Chex

7 cups Crispi cereal

1 cup Cheerios

1 cup Pretzel pieces

1 cup cashew nuts (you can use your favorite)

5 tablespoons melted butter

1 teaspoon season salt

¼ teaspoon garlic powder

¼ teaspoon onion powder

4 teaspoons Worcestershire Sauce

2 teaspoons lemon juice.

Combine all the dry ingredients in a large shallow oven proof pan. I use an old broiler pan.

Melt the butter and add the seasoning, Worcestershire sauce and lemon juice.

Pour over the dry ingredients and stir well to make sure all pieces are coated well.

Bake on 250º for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes. Remove from pan and cool on paper towels.
